You cannot walk the road down to Positano, much too long and the drivers are insane! Happily it did not disappoint - the trail has heavenly coastal views practically the entire way. The trail to Positano continues to the left of the stairs. The purple line is the optional trail to avoid the main trail (which has a lot of exposure to cliffs and drop offs) and the gray line is the optional route from Nocelle to Positano. One morning in Nocelle, as we made the walk up to the bus stop, I met eight people going in the same direction. There is fairly frequent bus, in morning there is 8:25am and 9:45m, takes 20-25 minutes, costs 1.75 and you pay on bus no problem.
